Sand Dunes on Mars

Low gravity, air pressure, sand, Martian winds and some other conditions lead to the formation of huge dune sands on Mars. Therefore, the red planet has the largest volcanoes, the deepest canyons and also the biggest sand dunes among the planets of the solar system. For example, Mars Global Surveyor has observed dunes twice as tall as terrestrial ones.

The Mars Exploration Rovers, which are currently on their way to Mars and will get there in early 2004, will have cameras on board which will help scientists take a closer look at these gigantic structures.
